“Gordon Allan” is Art You love by Elizabeth Traub. This piece is dedicated to Gordon. My partner in life. This piece was drying. I had not yet named it. I was trying to create an artful piece that would be in Gordon’s home. I was going to surprise him. Wrap it up, and give it some kind of name that would be a reminder of something he and I have done together. A gift to the man who give many gifts.
I have been painting like a mad women the past few months and many pieces are now coming to life. Layers of thoughts and layers of painting and canvas after canvas waiting for the finishing touches. Painting is an emotional process for me. The smallest details of life inspire me. Words spoken and visual inspirations come to me daily. I am not always going back to the same canvas. I have dozens of starts and stops. My feeling or my mood move to a new canvas or back to one waiting for the finishing brush strokes across the canvas.
I was surprised today when Gordon walked past my studio. An outdoor/indoor room. There is glass on three sides, a solid wall on the back wall and wide open to the sky is my ceiling. He could see this piece drying. Like many days quite a few pieces drying. He often looks in, smiles, and says something like, “Those look great. You will sell these”. But this piece. Drying among many he said, “I want this one above my bed in Lake Oswego”. So much for a gift or surprise.

I started this piece about three weeks ago. I kept going back to it and added a little here and there. Kept walking away and coming back. Finally the balance of colors and just what I loved. But should I add in more green? Should I add in more blue? White? No, this is it. And today he walks by an says he want this.
Alas I can still surprise him. I will have this sent to his home in Lake Oswego and have his son hang it before we arrive in a couple of weeks back in Oregon. Writing this post today from sunny Palm Desert, CA.
