My Life Today

“My Life Today” by Elizabeth Traub

In the late 80’s I attended the Art Institute of Seattle. I was in their “Advertising and Graphic Design” program. We were given an assignment based on the details of knowing a client. The instructor said that within 30 minutes you should know enough information from your future client to tell their story. Isn’t that what advertising is? The ability to tell the story of your products or services in a quick tag line and image. He then assigned a 30 minute project with nothing but your pen and paper. He said to basically draw your life as it is today.

After the assignment we brought our work to the front of the room and assessed each creatively drawn piece. Writing what we could learn, on each student, based on their picture.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to do the same assignment some 35 years later. My daughter in love called me as I was finishing. She and I chatted away and I colored the entire piece while we chatted.

Sweet Darling Daughter In Love

She is an interior designer and about to deliver my first grandson. We both chatted away and I finished this piece. The next time I teach Art Camp I will give my young students this project.

“My Life Today” tells the story of a colorful and wonderful life I have. Eight grown children, one daughter-in-love, a grandson on the way. Biking, tennis, lover of music, flowers, birds, and cats. And a handsome wonderful man in my life. “My Life Today” Tells a small glimpse into my life. I think I will do this every year around the same time.
