The Grab-Nabber

Do you ever feel dizzy over just how much information is available on the web?  When I was a young girl I was not particularly fond of being called Dizzy Lizzy.  Given the past two weeks, be my guest in calling me just that. I truly am Dizzy Lizzy. Bleary eyed from reading over all the different ways to learn how to navigate business on the web.

Today while painting with my business partner I explained it like this. (check out what we painted here: http://hungouttobuy.com/blog/ )You walk into a mall, lets say the day before Christmas.  Busy with people, displays over-stuffed with products, and the tap of shoes coming from every direction on the tiled floors.  You stop, look up at the store name, think and then walk another 20 feet to the next store, and then again look up and decide to either go in or move on.  Twenty feet from one store’s entrance to the next store’s entrance.  The crowd slowing you down, so even if you are not going in you can still take in the display and the products in passing.   The business pleased that you are looking in and then deciding to walk in and give them business.  Now transfer this scenario to the world wide web.

You have one millimeter from one business to the next business to consider. You have crowds of people moving you so fast, that if you blink you miss that one chance, that one door that was passed over. You don’t get to look in the windows and take it all in. One big picture window is now a screen with sidebars, hooks, links, products and pages and pages of products to sort through.  As a business owner it’s  like you are standing at the front door of your business trying desperately to pick people with what we call in our home a “grab-nabber”.  Each of my boys has one of these and I am learning just how to use the “grabnabber” of social media.  It’s not easy.

I have over 20 years of experience in business. Face to face, shake your hand, glad to meet you kind of business. Within a few minutes of that face to face meeting I can discern if I have made a new friend in business.   I am a middle child of five kids. The middle child, everybody’s friend and easily able to connect and make friends.  Now I get the sense that people are working really hard just to grab one new friend in business.  One person who is going to spend their money for the product or service.  Linking all the hooks to get that one person, get that feedback, get that graph bar higher.  I think I would have better luck with a “grab-nabber” standing outside my front door.

I think if you are, by nature, socially awkward which I have had those moments, then Social Media is a God send. Socially awkward people are some of the most intelligent people I know.  I can see how being able to freely connect is less intimidating via the web.  I personally love meeting people face to face, so guess what my awkward is?  Social Media.  How do I fix this. I go to this guy named “Doug’s” website and buy a “grab-nabber” ( http://www.edufuntoys.com/ )   Interesting I started following Doug on twitter because I think he has a great selection of kids toys.  Not a face to face meeting. No confidence built in the business owner himself, just that good decisions are being made in toy buying which in return does build a confidence.

If you could list just THREE things to be doing on Social Media what would it be?  If buying a “grab-nabber” is first on your list then truly I must be doing something right.
